Stone Head

FAQ’s…
The moon is going to slide in front of the sun and look really neat.
Hey, I’m working on it. Beauty takes time.
It will be more fun. It will be viewed in the middle of a great big beautiful valley with like-minded Friends of Stone Head.
Fun is when you get really excited about something and are glad you did it. Sometimes laughter is involved if it makes you feel “funny.” I think we need to talk.
Well, when I speak of laughter I’m really talking about outrageous whooping and hollering at the moment of second contact.
Second contact?
Okay, I don’t want to loose you. First contact is the first moment the moon makes contact the edge of the sun. The sun will still be real bright but there is always an astronomy nerd in the crowd who will have a special smoked lens and will let everyone know when the show starts by shouting out, “We have first contact”! A big roar will come from the crowd (see definition of fun) We’ll have about 45 minutes before I play “Zer Sprach Zarathustra” (theme song to 2001 A Space Odyssey, for you movie buffs) at the moment of second contact, when the disc completely covers the sun. Planets and stars will be visible overhead, surrounding a hole in the sky.
Broach the subject with your boss. Tell him you’ll need this as a “personal day”. Do it now. You never know when co-worker might want that same day off, especially if he happens to be an astronomy buff.
You may feel very moved, awestruck, and perhaps inspired. You may feel the temperature drop a few degrees. For some it will be a religious experience. For some it will feel like just another day at the office because that’s where you’ll be when your co-worker is here in your place.
Don’t feel so guilty. I may not be around then either. You can still be there in spirit. The names of all those who have gone before us and had intentions of being here will be read out loud on the PA system, hopefully by me (assuming I can get over my fear of microphones between now and then). Let me know your intentions soon. You never know what tomorrow may bring (cough, cough).
